At recess, there were three groups of kids; the little girls who sat and gossiped, the little boys who played basketball, and the kids in between who did nothing but run without a rest. This last group was the group that held you in - though you certainly weren’t restrained. Recess was the time of day where you could finally get all your energy out, and you and your friends did just that.
The group consisted of your closest friends; Gamzee, Karkat, Sollux, Equius, Nepeta, and Aradia. However, today was one of those days when none of you were really sure what to do. You ran, but all of you had ran everywhere… how exactly could you change it up?
“Yo, what in the motherfrick are we supposed to do?” Gamzee asked, “It’s so borin’ just sittin’ here, starrin’ at nothin’.”
Aradia smiled. “We could play adventure!”
Sollux sighed and gave her a pat on the shoulder. “I don’t know if you noticed, but none of uth like playing adventure.” She frowned, but didn’t protest.
“Somebody needs to fucking think of something before I rip my god damn hair out!” Karkat cried, clenching his fists in complete anger.
Nepeta’s lip began to quiver, her innocence practically ruined. You put an arm around her and glared at Karkat. “Don’t say that stuff on the playground, Kitkat… remember when Vriska got in trouble for saying the f word to Tavros the other day?”
He rolled his eyes. “Ugh, fine…” He crossed his arms, and a barely noticeable light red blush appeared on his face.
The group of you stood in a circle on the black top, arms crossed and feet tapping. All of you were trying to think of something. The six of you were more than just low life third graders, you were low life third graders with high amounts of ADHD coursing through you.
You needed something to do, and fast.
“Excuse me, friends,” Equius suddenly spoke up, “I propose we have a race.” He wiped a fresh coating of sweat from his forehead, as if he had burned calories just trying to think of a simple idea.
“Thoundth like thomething to do, I guess,” Sollux said with a shrug. Everyone else nodded in agreement.
“Where will we race?” Aradia asked.
Gamzee smiled a goofy smile and pointed far to the back of the playground. “How ‘bout the motherfrickin’ soccer field?” All of you turned your eyes to the magnificent plain of grass.
“Purrfect!” Nepeta exclaimed.
The seven of you took off running for the field, the you tried not to run too fast, in fear of ruining your chances to win the race. Once you arrived at the soccer field, you all examined it closely, trying to get the perfect strategy ready.
“I’m guessing we have to run already around the fu-” You gave Karkat a dirty look, “-freaking field, right?”
“Of course,” You replied with a smile, “it wouldn’t be a good race without a bit of a challenge.”
As everyone was readying themselves at the invisible starting line, Aradia spoke up. “I don’t think I can race because of my skirt. I don’t want to trip and fall.”
Sollux spoke. “It’s not like it’s a big deal.”
“It is a bit of a big deal, I’ll get covered in mud and dirt.”
You gave her a big hug. “It’s okay, Aradia. I’ll bring back a win for you.”
Aradia smiled at you as you readied yourself at the starting line. Nepeta walked up next to you. “I don’t want Aradia to have to stand all by herself, so I don’t think I’ll race, either.” She slipped off her olive green trench coat and threw it on your back. “So, take this for good lucky.”
You grasped the sleeves and tied them around your neck, making it seem like you were wearing a cape. You nodded at her as a thanks, and watched as the guys lined up next to you. Then you realized; you were the only girl in the race! That made it even more of a challenge.
Sollux elbowed you playfully in the side. “Are you ready to lothe, [Name]?” He said with a smirk. You simply shook your head. You then glanced to the other side of you, where Equius stood. He seemed to be sweating. Was he nervous? You couldn’t really get a feel for his emotions, considering the fact that he towered over you.
Nepeta stepped in front of the four of you. “Okay, everyone! We’re gonna have a good, clean race! Also, Aradia and I have decided that whoever wins gets kisses on the cheek from us.” She batted her eyelashes sweetly.
Aradia shouted from behind, “I did not agree to that!” and you swore you heard Karkat grumble something. Before you could comprehend anything, however, Nepeta threw her hands in the air, signaling the start of the race. The four of you took of as fast as you could, like you were all running for your lives.
At first, you were easily in third place. Karkat could really give less of a frick if he won or not, and Gamzee was far too woozy to actually focus on running in the right direction. He tended to be the kid who was out of it. This guaranteed that you wouldn’t be shunned for being slow, which was already a good thing on its own.
You kept your breath steady and sped up, trying to make it neck-and-neck with Sollux. Once you were finally next to him, the two of you were slightly pushing each other, trying to drive the other off course. As you did this, Sollux was laughing pretty hard, and soon enough, you were, too.
That’s when you turned the second corner and things got serious.
Both of you sped up, but it was you who got the better end. You made a tight turn of the corner, making it easy for you to pass up Sollux. Now, all that was left was to pass Equius. He was the one person you didn’t expect to beat, but man, would you try.
You tried to run as fast as possible, but you were only just short. He was right in front of you, but you couldn’t quite get beside him. When you reached the third turn, however, you cut the corner and were able to run next to Equius, making the two of you neck and neck.
“Are you getting nervous, big boy?” You whispered to Equius, making him jump.
He shook his head. “I am actually very confident in myself, [Name].”
“Well, I wouldn’t be for long.” Before he could say another word, you sped up, the finish line only a few yards away.
Those last yards felt great. You dove over the finish line, taking a faceful of dirt. Of course, you didn’t care. You had just won, and to top it all off, you were against four guys. How great were you?
“Congratulations, [Name]!” Nepeta squealed, helping you up off the ground.
You nodded. “Thanks.”
With that, Nepeta left a sloppy kiss on your cheek. You giggled, the feeling tickling your skin. Aradia somewhat willingly pecked your cheek as well. It made you feel like a real champion.
“You boys should give her a kiss, too!” Nepeta suggested, “She did beat your butts purretty good, hehe!”
The boys lined up next to you, and it was almost like a cycle. Gamzee kissed your cheek, leaving a few spots of white makeup on your skin. Sollux licked your cheek, trying to be an annoyance, so the makeup probably came off then. It took quite a bit of courage, but Equius kissed you next. He made it quick, and boy, was his face blue when he pulled away. Finally, Karkat awkwardly leaned in and kissed your cheek, but he was certainly attached longer than anyone else.
“Good freaking job…” He muttered, walking away with yet another scene of light red blush on his face.
You grinned, a bit of blush now on your own face. “We should race more often,” You muttered.
