Jake grabbed his adventuring pack, which held all of his supplies; a canteen, a few sandwiches, and his prized gun. He tiptoed over to the front door, hoping that he wasn’t making too much noise. He wanted to be quick with his actions and be back in the morning before you even noticed he was missing from bed.
Unfortunately, things would not work out the way he wanted.
“J-Jake?” A voice whispered. It was high pitched and somewhat squeaky. “Where a-are you g-going?”
Jake turned around to see you standing there. He gulped, knowing that this conversation would not go well. “Just go back to bed, Miss [Name]. I just have to go run… an errand.” Your lip quivered, and he just knew you were getting the wrong idea. “I promise I’ll be back in the morning, okay sweetheart? This is just really important.”
“Then why are you sneaking off in the middle of the night?” You squeak, your voice moving to all sorts of different pitches. You bit your bottom lip in hopes to stop the wave of tears that were about to come.
Jake immediately ran to you, sweeping you up in a comforting hug. He gently kissed your temple. “I was hoping that I could come back in the morning and you wouldn’t even know that I had been gone. There is a very important adventure that I must go on, and I promise that I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
You sniffle and look deep into his eyes. “Why can’t I come?”
“It’s a very dangerous and you know that I’d never want you to be hurt, Miss [Name].” Jake grinned at you and ruffled your hair. You couldn’t help but giggle.
“So, you promise you’ll be back tomorrow?” You asked, instantly becoming serious again.
Jake nodded. “I’ll try as hard as I can to make it back.” He planted a kiss on your forehead and turned to the door, sending you one last smile before exiting the house. You stared at the door for a bit, wondering if he was really coming back. You wondered if he was really just leaving for ever, just like in all of the stories and TV shows. Would he do that to you?
You didn’t think so. You knew Jake was too good of a guy for something as horrible as that.
All you really wanted to think about though, was how long it would actually take him to get back home.
Jake began his treck down the dirt path where your home was located. He was heading farther and farther away, and missing you every minute of the walk. He knew that soon enough, the house wouldn’t be visible and that he would have no reassurance of himself coming back.
What if I die on this adventure? He thought. He’d never even thought something as gruesome as that. He had never taken the time to contemplate a question like that. He almost always used the same model; there is no try, there is only do.
And by God, he was going to do this for [Name].
Jake would make sure that his girlfriend of two years would have the best relationship she had ever had, and it would all depend on this adventure. He couldn’t die, it wasn’t an option. If he was hurt, he could die knowing that he wasn’t able to finish out his plans, [Name]’s plans, or anything else he had thought about.
From that point on, there was no turning back.
